Challenge
Nestled in the Hollywood Hills, The Ford is an open-air amphitheater with just under 1,200 seats. Built in 1920, The Ford’s summer season was designed to enable Los Angeles County music, dance, film and theater groups to produce performances successfully in a major venue. Today, The Ford is dedicated to presenting a diverse roster of events, representing music and dance styles reflective of the communities that comprise Los Angeles County. In 2013, implementation on an $80 million rehabilitation began to address needed improvements, including repairing decades of structural water damage to the office, storage, and bar areas below the seating area.
Solution
Siplast provided a high-performance waterproofing system to remediate the water damage that has been harming the historic Hollywood Hills theater landmark since the 1930s.
- Resilient waterproofing with UV resistance
Siplast Terapro Waterproofing System was selected as the waterproofing solution for the outdoor deck that would also address leak damage. This resilient PMMA liquid-applied system is monolithic, durable, and water/ UV resistant. - Aesthetically pleasing surfacing
Siplast Pro Accent Chips were used as the surfacing component of the Terapro Waterproofing System to provide a beautiful, pristine finish to an outdoor deck, which was previously discolored by water patches and the early signs of erosion. - Completed on a tight schedule
The fast-curing chemistry and resilient physical properties of the PMMA Terapro Waterproofing System enabled on-time delivery, fast return to service, and allowed for The Ford’s shows to go on.

Terapro Waterproofing & Surfacing Systems
In the 1930s when polymethyl methacrylate resins, commonly known as PMMA, were first synthesized. Practical applications for the new resin, which included everything from aircraft windshields to dentures, soon followed. The material proved to be exceptionally durable, and the use of PMMA grew rapidly. But in spite of its outstanding performance, the material was too rigid for use in waterproofing applications – until the 1970s.
